Older Dog and Puppies?

Will an older dog help train a puppy?
Much can be learned from an older dog. Both good and bad behaviors.
Best older sibling to a puppy is a healthy, active, socialized and trained dog.

Grumpy older dogs can give a bad impression
to brand new puppies. Dogs will often model the behaviors of other dogs. Make sure that your older dog does not have to protect resources from the puppy, including you.

Make sure to provide plenty of mental and physical exercise for both the puppy and the older dog.
Better for each dog to have more one-on-one time with you than playtime with each other.

Make sure to reward for the behaviors you want from both dogs. It's easy to ignore the older dog when the puppy is misbehaving. If you give more attention to the dog that is behaving, then the other dog will want to copy that behavior.

This works both ways for both dogs. Overall, make sure to support the older role model
in training your new puppy. Also, make sure to take thetime to train your
new puppy one-on-one to help them succeed.

Feel free to reach out to the Doggie Dojo for any questions you may have,

Trevor started training dogs at the age of six. At the age of sixteen, he began instructing his own private lessons and classes. With over twenty years of experience in training dogs, his passion is to use his experiences over the years to help people grow closer to their canine companions. He launched a dog training educational platform called Doggie Dojo. In 2015, he was invited for the first time to speak at the Association of Professional Dog Trainers conference on his work with kids and dogs. He got invited back to speak in 2017 and 2018. Trevor and his Border Collie Daisy made it to the finals in AKC Dog Agility Nationals in 2019. He is also a Certified Professional Dog Trainer(CPDT-KA) and Certified Canine Fitness Trainer through the University of Tennessee.
When not training dogs or pursuing continuing education, Trevor joins his veterinarian wife in caring for and enjoying their animal menagerie. In addition to their dogs, they share their home with lizards and snakes and various birds. Also chickens and kinkajous (a prehensile-tailed animal from South America) and a very fastidious citified pot-bellied pig named Cashew. On rare occasions, they leave their personal zoo behind, Trevor and Malari (aka Dr. Howell) have been known to undertake adventures ranging from zip lining to scuba diving to sampling haunted houses. Closer to home, they enjoy canine agility, therapy dog work, and dog-accompanied hikes.
